Why does bathroom water taste so much better than kitchen water?
I’m serious.
This has boggled my mind since I was a kid. I will still go to the bathroom to get a cup of water before bed instead of going to the kitchen, regardless of the fact that I keep chilled water in the fridge.
There are times when kitchen water just simply will not do.
Maybe it’s better because it’s humble. No one ever suspects bathroom water of anything. It’s meant for flushing and washing and nothing more. Kitchen water is always assumed to be better or is at least the first one sought out by someone when they’re thirsty. Maybe all these years of concrete social norms has made bathroom water feel kind of second-rate.
If that’s the case, humble is delicious.
Maybe we should go about making all of our food and drink feel second-rate. We could yell at them and surround them with popular best-sellers. After several years without any sense of self-worth, all of our food will gain this newly discovered Humble Effect and be automatically infused with deliciousness.
I’ll bet humble chicken is finger lickin’ good.
I’m actually a little concerned that I chose to share this today. There are only two possible outcomes. 1) I confirm my mental instability 2) You all agree, bathroom water gets the word, and is then no longer delicious.
Number two would be a real downer. ♣
P90X Update: 10/90 Complete. I don’t want to get too excited, but I think my stomach is getting slightly smaller. Slightly. I should probably start focusing on eating better now that I’ve affirmed I can’t quit the workouts. Results will come faster and maybe I won’t be so miserable all the time. Just maybe.
In order to save your theory: I don’t agree! Haha, no seriously, I don’t have the slightest idea whether it’s true. Simply because I do with bathroom water what you describe, I use it to flush and wash. Will try it later though 🙂

Jackie, you really are bonkers! How can anyone write a post totally about whether bathroom water or kitchen water is better.
Not only are you bonkers..you are also brilliant! Absolutely fantastic…

umm eww. While my cats prefer drinking from the bathroom sink, I don’t touch anything that hasn’t dripped through the filter in my water pitcher.

you should rethink it. the cats are on to something.

can’t drink the water from either faucet here without a filter, so i can’t test your theory. but this post makes me like you a little more 😉

This is simple, logical, and probably true. Dammit.

This reminds me of the episode on Seinfeld where Kramer makes a whole meal in the shower. Maybe he was onto the ‘bathroom water.’

Absolutely love that show’s ability to turn everyday scenarios into comedic brilliance. Hilarious. I think I shall go watch the episode now. Thanks! 🙂

in Malta we can’t drink any tap water… but back in the UK, i always HATED the bathroom water! I think its because the taps are situated too close to where you pee…

lol I don’t know about that, but a lot of people certainly seem to agree with you 🙂

OMG! YES! Thank you! I’m not the only one.
I’ve always found bathroom water so much better. But I have a theory: we only resort to drinking bathroom water when we’re very thirsty and have no other way (i.e: late night when you don’t want to go down to the kitchen…). And because it’s bathroom water we don’t expect it to be extraordinary (quite on the contrary), but then it does taste good which surprises us and makes us think something magical must come out of that tap (when really, it’s exactly the same water you get out of the kitchen tap).
But then again, maybe something magical does live in bathroom taps.
Happy Monday!

Those are all incredibly valid points, Sarah. And with the addition of this minty fresh clean teeth thing, I’m starting to think there’s a lot more that goes into the magic-making than I presumed 😉

As a kid I used to love to drink straight from the tap in the bathroom. I would pretend it was a spring of fresh water bubbling out of mossy rocks 🙂
I didn’t used to drink water as a kid apart from that, it was usually squash or milkshake or whatever. Now I drink filtered water every day and I tend to dislike tap water due to the chlorine in it etc. But I still occasionally gulp a bit from the bathroom tap, maybe it is the minty fresh just cleaned teeth thing, or maybe you’re right and bathroom water is somehow better than kitchen water 😀
My favourite tap water is Norwegian. In England there is great regional variation, depending on whether you live in a soft water or hard water area. London water is foul; the tap water in Durham was nice when I lived there 20 years ago. That is probably way more than you wanted to know about my thoughts on tap water… 😀 maybe I’ll have to write a blog post about it too!

I want to try Norwegian water! And Durham! …or just go there. hmmmm maybe it is a minty fresh cleaned teeth thing. That makes a lot of sense. Almost an embarrassing amount of sense, actually.

No worries; you’re not the only one. My Cat would much prefer water from the toilet bowl or shower leftovers than the fresh kitchen-sink water in her bowl. Then again, she drinks rain water right off the balcony, so…

You definitely just put me on the same level with your cat. I get that, and I’m okay with it. Not because I think cats are superior, but because I think they’re on to something. 😛
