An Early Half-Anniversary Gift

23 May

Gift Box

Last  night I had one of those moments when you remember something embarrassing about yourself that you’d successfully repressed for years.  And I decided I would do you all the service of sharing it.

After all, you tune in time and time again.  I should reward you with some of my dark, inner secrets on occassion.

I actually have decided to use this opportunity to reveal a number of embarrassing factoids about myself.   We’re approaching 6 months together and you can consider it a sort of early half-anniversary gift.  You’re welcome.

1)  I had a teddy bear that wore a nightcap and long pajamas that I named Sherman.  When you pushed his paw, he sang a really lame song for which the lyrics were something like “Dream with me and sleep.  Bedtime is a magical time.”  Actually, that’s exactly what they were.  My older brothers devastated me one day by hanging him from my bedroom ceiling by a noose for me to discover when I flicked on the lights.

2) I was in love with an audiotape that came in a little pink box and was something about a girl and her raincoat.  It was narrated by Barbara Bush.  I played it over, and over, and over.

3) I was a Math 24 champion in my elementary school.  I was so super nerdy and intense about it that when I got to 6th grade no one would go against me to challenge the seat to go to the semi-finals. *Pushes up glasses*

4) When I was in elementary school, my friend and I used to do what we called “rain dances”, by stomping our feet in wild tribal-like dances and screaming ridiculous songs and nondescript noises and squawks.  When it finally rained, even if it was the next day, we basked in our obvious success.

5) My first cassette ever was a hand-me-down Ace of Base album from my brother.  I read through all the lyrics on the fold-up pamphlet on the inside and corrected them for grammar and spelling with an ink pen.  My brother was not pleased.

And there you are.  Five little slightly embarrassing facts from my past.  In the spirit of giving, what are the chances I can get you to share one in the comments?

C’mon – do it.  It’ll be fun.

    1) I am a complete science geek and an (ex)cheerleader.
    2) I am slightly mischivious and all my pranks generally don’t get noticed unless you look for them and when you find them you quietly die trying not to laugh.
    3) I name people after food and when my teacher or parents or somebody starts rattling off the lunch menu, all my friends crack up because she is talking about devoring all the kids in my class.
    4) I am studing for my pilots license not because I really want to fly, but becuase if someone else is flying I don’t want to die because of something stupid they did.
    5) I stand by the notion that “I am not random. I just think faster than you.”

I’m 25yrs old and still sleep with my teddy bear. My boyfriend turned 23 yesterday and so does he. I’m not ashamed. …he is a little.

I hug a pillow. Same concept, just seems more adult. And secret. 🙂

My favorite stuffed animal growing up was a three-legged, one-eyed camel. His name was Camee. I loved him dearly; so much so that I would take him to school, even into sixth grade, and all my friends were excited to meet him. I was awesome.

I am so easily distracted that all I can think about is when you cut into that perfect cake in your photo, the sound the knife will make when it hits the styrofoam base will be worse than nails on chalkboard. Wincing in imaginary anticipation.

Congrats on being the math champ. I can just see you pushing up your glasses in nerdy triumph!

I still sleep with my teddies (a select few of 4)
I had a ‘blanket’ until I got my first boyfriend at 18 and he started sleeping over. A little bit of cloth I just held when sleeping.
I used to tell weird lies when I was really young. Like I had pet monkeys and tigers, but they were at the vet whenever someone came to visit, or that I had a disease that made my nose turn blue and green.

I’m totally fine and normal now though of course.

This first bit isn’t embarrassing to me, but I wanted to share in that “OMG what a total coincidence!” way that my little sister had that exact same SleepyTime Bear. She’s about four years younger than you.

Okay, so: like everyone else who’s posted (except Pegoleg, and she’s probably just hiding it), I still sleep with a teddy bear, except mine’s a teddy dog. (Body of bear, face of whatever cute animal you want, ears of a dog.) I named him Theodore Kendrick IX because that way his name would be Teddy K9 (Canine). This occurred when I was little but I’m still quite proud of my cleverness.

Also, from the time I was very young until I went to college, I rocked back and forth to get to sleep. I don’t know why. It was murder on my hair. Sometimes, though, if I’m by myself and a little restless, I still do it for a couple minutes.

give it up, Peg. Everyone wants to know what you’re hiding in the childhood quirk bucket.

        Or maybe just me. 🙂

You know what? That is actually incredibly clever. I never named anything that well when I was growing up.

I should try rocking. On sleepless nights such as this, for instance.

Ohandbytheway, I was also obsessed about Magic: The Gathering during my senior year of high school. Geeked out so much on it, I ended up traveling to NorCal for a state tournament. *sigh*
