Project 365, Round Two

2 Jan

Well, it appears that I’ve renewed my domain for another year, so here I am on the couch again on a Wednesday night wondering what I have in my head to share.

By now you all know the answer is absolutely nothing.  And I appreciate you sticking around to listen to it.

It’s been exactly 2 years since I wrote my very first post in my very first 365 Challenge: to fire up a blog I once adored and had let sit dormant for years. It was far more successful and fulfilling than I could have imagined and I’ve become an advocate for 365 Projects, much to the irritation of my friends and family.

So it’s a new year and I need a new 365.  I didn’t do one last year; I think I was right to have taken a break.  It was a big challenge and a big payoff.  And I really missed that sense of satisfaction when the ball dropped of knowing I’d spent 365 days working on making one very specific thing about myself better.  I mean, what a waste of a year, right?

Well not a waste, but you get what I’m going at here.  Last year was good to me.  I got out of a corporate job that was sucking the life from my body and replacing my blood with black sludge.  Instead, I decided to go back to school to get a dual masters, not knowing how exactly that looked or how I would pull it off financially.  I lost twenty pounds and put ten back on (I’m choosing to celebrate the net -10), and I spent more time with my family and friends than I have in a long time.  All in all I’d say that’s a pretty darn good year.

But I’m a monster that can’t be satisfied with mere short-term human achievements.  And let’s face it: if you’re going to force me to keep writing by continuing to read, I’m going to need some subject matter besides awkward elevator conversations, how upset I get when old ladies cut me off when I’m shopping for produce, and my soon-to-be-famous million dollar ideas (if you have money to waste and want to sponsor me, please reference Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C and then wire me the money directly so I can squander it on my inventions).

I was going to tell you something when this all started.  Oh, right.  I’m going to run a 10K.

Oh man I just wrote it.  It’s right there staring at me, all big and 10Kish.

Well I thought about how it felt to finish a 365 the first time and I thought about what thing I could spend 365 days working to improve that would best-affect me in the future.  And that answer is my fat ass.  I shall dub it the Fat Ass 365.  I will spend every single day of this year doing something fitness-related for at least 20 minutes and I will celebrate my success with a 10K.  I already looked up the race.  I have the race.  It’s a go.

I thought I’d invite you all to join me and we could get jackie blog t-shirts and make a team and conquer world hunger or cancer or the dwindling population of honeybees together, but then I realized that if I did that you might actually come and I might have to deal with the anxiety of meeting several completely foreign people and that I might die of a panic attack before I even get to achieve my resolution.

So no, you can’t know which race. You might find me and inadvertently cause my death. That would be a shame.

This is somewhat about the 10K and much more about the fact that I need to seriously incorporate movement into my daily life.  It is a simple fact that I am happiest when stuffing my face with junk food and watching television or playing video games.  This will never change about me.  I mean, I can do other things and try to replace it and even if I’m successful, I’m always going to wish deep down that I could just be in front of a screen stuffing my face and filling myself with disgusting self-deprecation that will breed in my mind and cause my own self-destruction over the course of several years. So this year, in order to help keep that natural adoration at bay, I’m enacting Operation Fat Ass 365.

I remember when I was just knee high to a grasshopper envisioning my 20’s.  Specifically, my late 20’s. I pictured what most lower middle class kids picture: a family and a nice house and great holidays and a job I don’t hate.  Of course then I grew up to be a member of the Boomerang Generation, a bunch of over-educated late bloomers with poor job prospects and an abnormally high sense of cynicism.  So I can’t really have any of those things little Jackie envisioned for herself at the moment (Sorry, little Jackie, but someday you’ll grow up and realize being a kid is all about being stupid and wrong all the time. Deal with it).

There is, however, one thing I envisioned that I can absolutely do – and that’s be in the best shape of my life.

I mean it’s now or never, right?  I turn 27 this year.  That’s like, 3 years away from 30.  I have to imagine that someday in the near future, kids, self-loathing, and hips twice my size are coming my way and before I give up all hope of ever being the kind of person who can run for 6+miles and/or fit into single-digit clothing, I’d like to give myself a fair shot by forcing myself to face my fat every single day for 365 days.  And then of course running a 10K so I can be sure something tangible came out of it: a certificate and a t-shirt.

There’s no doubt in my mind I’m going to hate it.  But that’s okay because I’ll have lots to write about.  I love to write about things I hate. And eventually I’m going to get sick of running and I’m going to have to do things like take dance classes or go to Zumba (Lord, help me).  And those, my friends, count as Lollipop Tuesdays.

I’m already in the midst of my next one. Tune in Tuesday for the goods.

So that’s what my 2013 looks like: sweaty and disgusting. I hope yours looks fantastic too.  And in all sincerity I hope you consider a 365 Project (it’s not too late!) or at the very least, one single Lollipop Tuesday for yourself.  That way when I cross the finish line we can both celebrate.

Happy New Year folks; thanks for reading – especially the seven of you who were with me from the start.  You’re all puddings.  Now tell me what your 2013 self challenge is.

Congrats on the goal. So many try to get in shape without a goal or plan. This year I’m working to raise money for science in schools by posting a nerd calender. Check out yearofthenerd.WordPress.com

Oh man oh man oh man. He-man brings back sweet memories. Love the part where he transforms his pansy tiger into a battle CAT. RAWR!

Just to let you know, I’ll be monitoring your progress very closely, so you better not start making shit up to stay accountable. Unless it involves chafing…well…that’s your business.

    Anyway, vid related:

Thank goodness someone knew what it was. Love the vid share. The Internet is a beautiful thing.

Ahaha I’m not going to make anything up. For the record, I’m in the midst of Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred. It meets all my requirements, being difficult, daily and 20 minutes long. Then it’s up to the track to run 2 miles to gauge what my goal pace should be for the 10K.

If I don’t pass out in the middle 😉

I agree 365 challenges work. I am a bit too old, however, go back to running. I am thinking of posting 365, but also my Take a Break Day. So will sign up to post an Emotional Fitness Tip every day, but only do the work days. And for your information 30 is a whole new wonderful world. Enjoy now, but don’t fear then. Glad to get a post from you again. Stay strong.

Jackie, I’m sure there are more than seven people who follow you regularly and as one that has missed your musings for the past year, im glad you are back. I am also working on a 365 project. 365 miles in 365 days. There is a group on facebook named just that if you are interested. It is just as it sounds: walk, run, crawl 365 miles in 365 days. You can do it on a treadmill or outside. It is wicked cold where i am in MA so i have started this by walking the mall and treadmill. As far as the 10k goes, i am not that ambisious (I cannot spell that word), if i get through the 365 miles, that will be an accomplishment… Good luck with your 365!

I love the idea of 365 miles in 365 days. That would have been a far better idea but unfortunately I’ve already registered and, you know, made a big deal out of it. DARNIT. At any rate I wish you the absolute best of luck.

And for the record, the first few weeks I had my blog in 2011, I wrote for a mere 7 subscribers 🙂

Also, on running… anyone can run. I think… I went from barely able to keep my breath to run 2 miles (I was in the Army), to able to run 5 or more without stopping. that was over 4 years, but you can do it!

Love it. In fact I can relate. When I turned 35 I thought, “man I do NOT want to be fat and 40.” I started right then. I ran my 1st 10k last year and it sucked…oh, um I mean it was GREAT!. ha ha. In all seriousness, I never in a million gazillion years though I could run that far. So while it was hard, like you said, it feels good to set a goal and actually achieve it. You can do it, and just remember, whenever you think you can’t or you want to quit, there’s a 37 year old out there that beat you. 😀

That’s all I need. Thank you so much. And thanks for sharing a success story, because honestly there’s no way in hell I see myself as the kind of gal that is going to finish a 10K. I appreciate the encouragement 🙂

I have so many things I want to do. I told my husband 2013 is the year of FUN. I have two young kids (the latest one in July), am turning 35 this year and work full time. So, I really want to work in some fun with all of the cleaning up pee and poo, running around like a crazy woman all day every day, working to lose the 30+ pounds that seem to now be a permanent part of my body….the list goes on. So kudos to you on your endeavor. I would agree with your assessment – do it now, while you can! Just thinking about running for that long makes me feel out of breath.

Maybe you can make the fun and the dropping the extra 30 part of the same equation? Maybe. Being a mom is surely an obstacle when it comes to time and freedom and basically everything else that makes traditional goal-setting valid. 🙂 I wish you the absolute best of luck and think your resolution is one of the best I’ve heard so far 😉

I started my own 365 to focus on photography, but after reading this post I feel like A Fat Ass 365 is far more productive sounding. We share a birth year, but I never shared your motivation for this “best shape of my life” mentality. Until now. Inspired. While I refuse to give up on my 365 photo journal (3 days in… im commited), I don’t see any harm on tackling some saddle bags and muffin tops. Thank you for the motivation!

A 365 for Photography is absolutely productive! In fact, I was inspired to start this whole blog and my first 365 because of a photo project over at http://herdaysarenumbered.com 🙂
But heck yes for getting someone on board – tackle those bags and tops. I’ll be huffing and puffing all year. Follow me on Twitter so we can complain to each other.

Hi there, just stumbled across your blog and am enjoying it muchly!

Running a 10k is a great goal to set yourself. Just don’t do what I did…

I consider myself reasonably fit, but only up to 400m 🙂 I’m much more of a short distance man, so running 10km was pretty ambitious. Over the space of a few months I worked my way up to feeling comfortable(ish!) over 2km, 4km, 5km. 7km was ok, but I was definitely struggling. I then took an unexplainable left turn in my logic and thought, “Yeah…7k is pretty close to 10km, pretty much the same thing really.”

I died. Literally. That magic 7km barrier came around and I crumbled. My feet weren’t conditioned enough, my heart was telling me to get to the nearest hospital, and all rational thought processes left my mind, replaced by a lone mantra, “Run, finish…run, finish…”!!

With a bit of extra, and more diligent, training I would have been fine, and I’m sure you will be too! Good luck with the challenge!

    Andrew.

Why thank you very much! Of course, this comment completely freaks me out since I was only committing to a 5K until my friend convinced me to shoot for 10. I’ll stay up all night chewing on this. And my eminent defeat.

I just emailed my family to ask them to be at the finish line so that if I die at the 7 mark, I can imagine them all mocking me if I fail. That should be good motivation.

Thank you, notanother! I certainly do appreciate it and blush and such but I must admit I have a love/hate relationship with these, as laid out here: https://thejackieblog.com/2011/10/03/how-do-you-feel-about-blogger-chain-awards

But in case it will keep you up at night, here are 7 random facts about me:

1)I have a natural bright blonde streak down the back of my head that I’ve had since birth and my father has forever stamped as the cause of my occasional idiocy
      2) I once ruined my parents’ couch by using the back of it as a crayon mural
      3) I was in the Macy’s Day Parade in high school
      4) I was a Math 24 Champion
      5) I thought the USPS logo was a man wearing a fancy hat until a few years ago, when I realized it was actually an eagle
      6) I went to a Christian school for the first few years of grade school and had to sit out at recess and read the Bible because I looked at the calendar on the wall to see how to spell “Wednesday” for my spelling test. I still resent this.
      7) I had a “band” in 3rd grade called the Sugarflowers. I made a logo and I wrote songs on my mini keyboard. I still remember all of them.
