My cat is making me doubt my ability to be a good mother.
I sometimes think about killing my cat.
I’m having a really hard time dealing with my cat’s dependency issues.
She used to just be a very loving cat who would rub up against me to see if I was interested in her affection. If she deemed it appropriate, she would launch into an all out love fest all over my lap, legs, feet – wherever she could maneuver herself for my attention.
But now she’s a monster.
From the moment I wake up, she’s there – staring at me. She follows me into the bathroom, follows me from the shower to my bedroom, and from the bedroom to the door. I used to think she did it because she was hungry, but every time I rush to feed her in the morning, there is still evidence of her meal from the evening prior.
Sometimes I get so creeped out by her watching me get dressed that I put her outside the door until I’m finished.
When I come home after work she goes into full attack mode, tripping me while I walk, lurking over me while I cook, and sometimes ramming her head into my hand so forcefully that I have actually spilled things on myself. She’s insatiable.
I thought her new attitude was a symptom of loneliness. I thought that perhaps I wasn’t spending enough time with her. But regardless of whether I pet her for an hour straight and follow it up with a rousing game of “chase the laser” or I ignore her all day, she cannot be tamed. I’ve fed her treats, massaged her, pet her nicely, pet her harshly, picked her up, taken her for a walk (yes, I took my cat for a walk), and let her lie on me even when it’s incredibly inconvenient. None of it helps. If I want to read something, I have to do it standing up or my book will get forcefully nudged out of my hand, and she will spend her time putting her body between me and the page I am reading.
She has been known to lie down directly on top of something I have in my hand as I read it.
At night I’m so terrorized by her that even when I’m not yet asleep, I slow down my breathing and fake it so she moves on.
I’m living in fear and I can’t take it anymore. It’s a wonder I can even do a blog a day without her putting her litter-laden paws all over the keys and foiling my attempts.
Recently, I’ve been feeling slightly maternal. I don’t know if it’s the soon-to-be-aunt in me or the ticking of my own biological clock, but babies are starting to kind of grow on me. But now I’ve got this insatiable cat and I’m starting to feel like my entire life revolves around her and her ridiculous requests and I just can’t do this.
I can’t be a mom if my cat is introducing me to what I can expect from motherhood. I fear I may become violent. ♣

Gosh sounds like you’ve got serious problems with kitty. I am not a cat person myself. We had one years ago that I found as a stray kitten at work. He never lost that feral nature & was just like you described yours. Our last few pets jhave been poodles & they are the greatest. They are a bit catlike, friendly cat that is, as they are very loving & cuddly dogs. At least the ones we’ve had are. Good luck with it.

She is owning you I have two cats or should say one the other one is my daughters. The other cat bothers me so much when I am eating something that I do not enjoy eating any more.. He also does the head butting when he wants attention, but the following around and the rest of it not sure what to make of it. Had one cat that did that to me not the following around but the sleeping on me and sitting by me… Have you thought about getting another cat for her to play with.. You might want to try a spray bottle of water and spray her when she gets out of control..

I have indeed gotten another cat and I love that they chase each other around and get exercise, but he doesn’t really pal around with her or anything. I’m very afraid to get another cat – I’ll start to feel like I have an infestation 🙂

I used to live with a roommate who had 2 cats. They did this same thing and they drove me CRAZY! I’d wake up in the morning and they would be sleeping on my face. Needless to say, I’m glad I’m not living with this roommate any more.

My cat follows my boyfriend around the house and bugs him to get up out of bed every day but he simply stares at me. All the time out of the corner of my eye, I can see him sitting there staring at me. He’s completely black too, so he blends in with a lot of stuff and it sometimes scares the daylights out of me to turn my head and he’s just right there in my face, big huge eyes wide open and staring…I’m starting to think he’s plotting something.

My Mom’s cat is a calico who has a black splotch on her chin and it looks like a little chin strap. One leg is orange and the other is black. And she has matching white feet, and little black tufts coming out of her ears. She has a fluffy white neck.

My cat used to do that too. The solution: I adopted another cat (male and old) and they are happy and independent now. I almost miss her: She doesn’t sleep in my bed anymore.
You can be a wonderful mom if your cat is introducing you to what you can expect from motherhood.(But children is a million times hard work) Hehe!

My cat recently became annoying like what you mentioned. She used to be cute, follow me around sometimes, sleep on my bed, and sit with me at the computer. Now she is forceful with everything she wants. She always demands food whenever I’m about to sit down to eat, she constantly sits on my computer chair (which she knows is not allowed), and she refuses to wait outside the bathroom while I take a shower (then demands to be let out before I’m finished). And she’s like a little dog, following me everywhere. Maybe our cats are just going insane.

OMG, that pic says it all. That’s such a completely disapproving stare. On the other hand, it could be translated as ‘I am the queen of everywhere. Stop looking at the computer and come pet me NOW’. Either is possible in the cat-world 😀
Hold on, maybe it’ll get better. Just maybe. 🙂
P.S. congrats on being FP.

I have a male cat that does everything above. Drives me nuts.
But I just had an insane thought, maybe they are trying to tell us the world is about to end and they want to be where we are, so we can still feed them, and slather them with attention.

At least your cat shows interest. We have two. My cat only lets me pet him when he wants food and my BF’s cat (who looks just like yours) has completely changed after we moved house 2 years ago. We can’t pick him up anymore, he hisses at us every time we get close to him and is super aggressive to my poor cat who loves him. Complete psycho…

awww I had a lot of trouble with Lola when we first moved – I felt like she hated me and she did some of the things you listed. It’s been 2 years and he’s still the same, though? That’s rough. Lola mellowed out. Moves are so hard on them. I’m gearing up for one soon and am seriously worried about what kind of cat I’ll end up with when it’s over 🙂 Good luck with your little terror!

I have the solution… Get another cat! It could be that your cat wants to talk so by getting anothger cat she will have pussy company and will then leave you alone.
To be loved so much is so humbling. My cat stumpy sleeps with me but Kitty Kat sleeps with the dogs.

Love your post! Great sense of humour you have!
Your cat has attachment issues! But I heard some babies grow up into attached toddlers that follow you to the toilet and stand outside, knocking every 5 seconds to make sure you’re there; follow you to change and clings on to you wherever you go . . motherhood is scary!

Much of what you describe is true of one the cats that adopted me. It is as if she is like a gaurdian and hierachial member in the guise of a walking, hair shedding cloud of grey.
Do I get mad at her? No, because she is much like any ‘baby’. She understands that she shouldn’t claw things and do other things that annoy, but I acknowledge she is what she is, a cat and will behave much like any other cat. If I humanise her, she is the same as a toddler, finding ways to communicate with me.
I enjoyed this blog posting and I can see that it has caught the imagination of others.
Best Regards.

OH my gosh, so well written. So perfectly on point. Hilarious. I have a cat like this too who, even after he has become full grown, tries to climb on my shoulder when I’m working or sit on my laptop. He meows. He purrs so damn loud. He rubs against my feet. He knocks the coffee out of my hand and sends it flying.
My sister has a baby. I take care of him sometimes.
I think babies are easier than cats.

oh man, I wish I could keep my cats out of my bedroom. I’ve read so many articles suggesting that they interrupt sleep and I’m also allergic so keeping them out of my bed would be awesome. But alas, I can’t deal with the clawing and meowing and have traded it for sniffles and interruption.
